It just so happens that it turned out to be one of my favourite images. I had this idea to shoot it Mad Men style and I think I got close. It was a quick shoot, only 30 minutes or so but it was good fun.
For the gear nerds out there, I shot tethered with my 5Dmkii straight into aperture on a MacBook and this allowed me to check focus and make sure I was getting close to the idea I had. The lighting was simple: one massive softbox on camera right set to balance somewhat with the ambient and a second light acting as a rim light from behind and to the left outside the door. The toning was created later in aperture and photoshop. I'm really starting to dig portraiture of this nature, that makes you pause and wonder what the heck's going on. And no, he's not naked, there's a small pair of black shorts in there somewhere.

Dale Reubin

SOUP TO NUTS: EPISODE 2

So where were we...?
Since the last post I've been busy trying to assist photographers and get low end clients to gain experience and keep the cash flow, well flowing. It's been a tough road but a good one.
In this post I wanted to talk a little about assisting. I've been assisting Joseph Ford, Pete Webb and Paul Winter. A mixed bag of photographers but they're such great guys and they all use different gear which helps expand my knowledge.

How it came about was no short story. A lot of polite emails and a few quick phone calls but most of all loads of free favours and being willing to help with almost anything. The thing I learned was that it's not only about loving photography and being pretty good with the gear, pro photographers are all looking for someone with a sixth sense of what needs to happen next. They don't have time to keep asking for things to get done, lights to be checked on, lenses to be clean etc... So, being an assistant requires you to be one step ahead of whats happening. This comes with familiarity so not many photographers require you to work perfectly with them the first ever time you shoot together but it's something that definitely needs to be developed. Also if they're paying you (yep I said if) they expect you to know the stuff you said you knew when they first asked what you know, phew... If you end up being caught out on that one, they won't call on you in the future! Honesty first yo!!

Next, you'll need a leatherman (not too pricey from amazon) and super handy! Photographers tend to love organised people! And, if you haven't already got one an iPhone is super handy. Or I suppose any smart phone that has useful apps, I just happen to have an iPhone.

After all that, the biggest thing you need is courage and persistence, these are busy folk and chances are if you're calling them up and wanting to assist then you're not the first or even the 51st person to do so. But, as I've proven, it is possible.

Go for it!

BTS photo from assisting Pete Webb.

Dale Reubin

RECENT SHOOT + LIGHTING DIAGRAM

Just thought I'd share one of my favourite shots from a recent photo shoot where I was asked to photograph some trapeze artists doing what they do best. Makweta or Amakweta is the name given to young boys of the Xhosa tribe when they enter into the process of becoming a man. This tradition is taken very seriously and the boys are not considered men unless they complete and survive the ritual. The boys are circumcised by a witch doctor and then have to survive two weeks in the wilderness. They build themselves shelters and paint themselves white with a mixture of chalk and water-which wards off evil spirits. In past times the boys were expected to craft their huts out of mud and natural materials whereas now the culture seems to be adopting certain comforts and luxuries. It intrigued me as to how this has ben allowed little by little and year by year. A culturally based tradition changing.
I had negotiated to spend some time with the makweta's roughly two months before my trip to South Africa and was excited that it was all agreed. This wasn't the case. They were very cautious of a white person wanting to take photo's of their sacred ritual and after about half an hour of talking the elders of the tribe decided not to give me permission. Bummed! Two months of planning and it all fell apart. Thankfully my fixer was an ex-detective and said he'd find another group of makweta's. On the drive home He called and asked me to rush to a location about ten minutes from where we were. He'd found a very pleasant group of makweta's who were happy to pose but we had to be quick. Camera out, strobe up and ready. I had no time to pose or direct the flow of the shoot because 5 minutes after getting there some other makweta's found us and were starting to shout at us to leave. 2 or three more shots and we had to run. We quickly gave some money as a thank you to the makweta's who were kind enough to let me photograph them and we were gone. Quick and dirty. After getting back and checking the metadata on the shots I was shocked to see that we were only with the makweta's for just less than 6 minutes. Foowee!
Anyway here are my favourite ones from the few minutes I had with them.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 620px; height: 413px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_rSF3HJ7hGng/TTBoIu030tI/AAAAAAAAAH8/uiJa03QIeqA/s1600/2WEB.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5562060039020597970" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 620px; height: 413px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_rSF3HJ7hGng/TTBobmRh7tI/AAAAAAAAAIE/cIkJsp03JoA/s1600/3WEB.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5562060363142393554" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 620px; height: 413px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_rSF3HJ7hGng/TTBojgElqPI/AAAAAAAAAIM/hplv0zrRfU0/s1600/4WEB.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5562060498916452594" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 413px; height: 620px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_rSF3HJ7hGng/TTBowLSdoYI/AAAAAAAAAIU/rRCaMNbdBFc/s1600/7WEB.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5562060716675801474" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 620px; height: 413px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_rSF3HJ7hGng/TTBo5eiir7I/AAAAAAAAAIc/vgdgDoc1u6U/s1600/9WEB.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5562060876462337970" />

SHARE YOURSELF

I came across a video that really inspired and saddened me at the same time. A woman totally devoted to photography creating beautiful images only discovered after she dies. If you're out there making great images, share them. It doesn't have to be all over the internet but at least open yourself up to those that are close to you. In my humble opinion, things are way better when shared with those you love. Anyway, enough ramblings, here's the video.

TRAVEL PLANS OR WHATEVER!

So, a while back I wrote a post about planning for an upcoming trip to South Africa. Well I think titling it 'travel plans' ended up being quite ironic. Nothing has gone smoothly so far. I'm currently writing this post while waiting in Johannesburg Airport for my final connecting flight. I've been traveling for four days on a trip that normally takes 18 hours door to door.
It started on Saturday by traveling to London Heathrow, all was looking good. "Cancelled" was what we saw as we walked through the terminal doors. After a few moments of panic we decided to head back home and rebook with the same airline as they reassured us a refund would be prompt. Unfortunately this meant loosing my South African airways domestic flight.
Back home, headache, headache, rebook, coffee, SAA domestic flight rebooked, bit of sleep, breakfast, phone calls, stress, off to the airport Sunday Afternoon.Finally get on the first of three flights after boarding was delayed for an hour. We then sat on the plane for another 45mins before we moved anywhere. Half an hour of taxiing and the pilate announces that we need to return to the terminal and de-ice the wings of the aircraft. Great! This meant that I’d miss my connection in Paris and once again lose the SAA domestic flight.
We arrive in Paris 4 and a half hours later (3:10am) and believe it or not it was my 26th birthday. I got checked into a crappy hotel and put on the next available flight to Johannesburg, which of course was at 23:20 that night.This meant I had roughly 20 hours to kill. By this stage I had made a few friends, in a very similar situation themselves. This lightened the burden tremendously and I’m extremely grateful for having met them. Brian, 74 and from Dorset, Richard, 30-ish from somewhere north of London (the name escapes me) and Adriana, mid twenties and from Argentina. We had a great time using all our meal tokens and they were especially kind to celebrate my birthday with me over the cheapest plastic cup of red wine. Of which I only managed a sip, yuk!
Later that day (not sure which day, I don’t even know what day it is today) my poor parents managed to book a third SA domestic flight for me. After loads of sudoku’s and many hours of studying Gate E62 at Charles De Goule Airport we used our final meal token and then qued up to board the flight to Joburg.
Adriana had gone her way to wait for her flight to Sao Paulo. Brian, Rich and myself were on the same fight.
After a bit of delay taking off and an 11 hour flight, feeling those wheels touch down reminded me that coming to SA is seriously worth all that hassle.The point of this article is to share my experience of how I realised that when stuff sucks and gets beyond the point of ridiculous in your life you still need to get through it whether you have a bad or a good attitude. It's mostly for personal work and to see my family who still live out there, so I'm planning to be shooting as often as I can between visits.

It's only once you've left the place you're familiar with, you start to appreciate it in a new light. I grew up in South Africa and even started shooting out there, but it's only now that I live in England, I look back at all the amazing things I never even considered shooting.
I wanted to share a bit about how I'm planning my trip out there because I don't want to waste time, once I'm there, standing around wondering what to shoot and who to contact. I'm sure those of you who read this also don't want to be stuck with all the gear and no idea on a trip you've paid for. It can be seriously frustrating.

Obviously it's a little easier for me as I'm still reasonably dialled in over there.

I've made a connection, through my father, with a friend of his who has agreed to take me along on a cultural ritual that the Xhosa tribe still perform today. The boys (as they are seen until they pass the test of manhood) only become men after they are circumcised. It's quite a hectic process and I'm hoping to make a few friends and take some portraits of the 'men' in all their traditional dress.

If you're wandering... No I'm not going to be taking picture of their penises being hacked at. Any man would go pale and weak at the knees while watching that. So just portraits for now.

A great photographer that's kinda known for similar stuff is Joey Lawrence or JoeyL. Check his stuff, it's properly amazing! He has an awesome blog too!

I'm also planning to organise a couple of shoots with some of my buddies who surf, ride moto cross, own clothing labels, fly light aircraft, bow hunt, etc...

So it's a fair amount of emails/ideas/plans to put on paper. But you know what they say: take it one step at a time!

I think one of the hardest things is trying to make pictures no one else has thought of. How can you keep your pictures interesting enough, for a Creative Director or Art Director at an agency, to actually stop and take a look? They see hundreds of new photographers every week!!

My closest guess is that you need to clear your mind of every other photographer/photograph you've seen and just be true to your eye, the way you see the world. No one else, just you and your subject and the moments that happen then and there.

Of course you need to nail the technical but more important (i think) is your vision and expressing that into pixels or film.

This is probably the thing that most of us find the hardest to do. I generally try to imagine every element in the picture and how I want to tell that story. Plan it out, write it down, draw it on some paper or in a notebook, even used the voice recorder on my phone. Just think how it's all going to come together and start the ball rolling. If you've planned a few ideas for each shoot you've built a frame work to add to on the day so you can then go wild and experiment.

I'm traveling pretty light but will follow up with a little gear post to show what I'm taking and how I'm packing it.

More details soon...

JUST GO FOR IT!

Apologies for the lengthy pause between posts. I just thought I'd share a quick success story of yours truly recently and a testimony of how powerful the internet can be.
About a month or so ago I made a short, simple little video and stuck it up on Youtube, Facebook and Twitter. Literally 15 minutes after it went up I got a message from a friend of mine ( who owns and runs two online businesses: Adventure Travel co and "find me a customer") saying he'd seen the video and loved it and asked if I wanted any more video work. He hooked me up with a company that had a project they wanted to shoot and the rest was up to me. I found out all the details of what they wanted to shoot, put a quotation together and sent it through. I was up against some other seasoned videographers but it seems it was my turn to step up to the plate. They called a few weeks later to say they'd decided to give the work to me. It turns out I wasn't even the cheapest quote!
Now I'm booking studios and have a heck of a lot of pre-production to sort out.

Just a quick word about hustling... It's not a dirty word or even a bad thing, you need to be able to speak out, be bold and have confidence in your abilities. After a meeting with the company I now also have a photo shoot lined up. I never wangled or cheated anything, I remained honest and said what I needed to say and they accepted the extra pitch.

If I had never made the video I would have had a pretty normal day, edited some photo's and been none the wiser. But I did and now I'm smiling cos my bills are paid for another two months.

Just go for it, you don't need anyones permission!

I'll be posting soon again!

SOUP TO NUTS: EPISODE 1

This is an adventure I've decided to undertake which will involve a series of episodes documenting the beginnings of my photography career. Scary I know, potential failure in front of the entire interwebs, but I've just got to do it. Why?? Because I haven't found anything on the net showing what photographers are doing from soup to nuts (an American idiom conveying the meaning "from beginning to end" like a three course meal). I know there's a lot of GREAT advice and behind the scenes videos out there and I'm not knocking what they're all doing, I just want to add another dimension, the nitty gritty!
I want to provide a source of info and how to's "from beginning to end" as I make mistakes and hopefully have a few successes along the way.
Maybe I'm the only one who gets caught up in the finer details of becoming a photographer but there seems to be a massive gap of information. It's either tacky how to's of how to photograph your pet or high end advertising photographers showing how they roll. I want to provide for the up and coming, the ones who have vision and passion to shoot for brands and big companies.
I'm nowhere near there yet which is why I'm starting from scratch and being honest in my endeavours and attempts.
I've done a few years of research and have been shooting for about 5 years but I've only in the last month decided to go full time into photography with no real leads and the smallest of foot holds.
In this series I hope to tackle topics like gear, personal shoots, approaching potential clients, how you find clients, assisting, marketing, social media, and whatever I'm working through at the time. Without doubt this is a crazy scary business to start but what do you do if you love photography and can't picture yourself doing anything else?
Well I'm hoping to uncover and share my findings and what I'm up to in my tenacious pursuit to become a pro photographer.

So, yesterday was spent on the internet searching the AOP members list and contactacreative.com sifting through the thousands of photographers to find the ones I'd like to assist in the future. I ended up with list of 17. I put a book together of their details and some of my favourite pictures from their portfolios. Today I called 7 of them and followed up the conversation with a quick and polite email and a few of my shots with a link to my site.
On the whole they were very polite and happy to talk to me, I even caught two of them mid shoot so I offered to call back next week and they were fine with that.
I'll keep going through my list and probably get 100% rejection at first but the key, I guess, is persistence!
Episode 2 is on the way...

PERSONAL SHOOT: 01

I just wanted to share a little shoot I put together this week. My good friend Eugene, who also appears in the Parkour photos I shot earlier this year, is a multi talented guy and also happens to be a pretty good longboarder. We went to one of his favourite hills (smooth tarmac) and had a walk around before shooting anything. I had a pretty good idea of the shot I was looking for and was so blessed to get exactly what I had in my mind.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 512px; height: 341px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_rSF3HJ7hGng/TECUSh4uDeI/AAAAAAAAADI/TfDpsmEwj9o/s400/01Web.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5494554591446830562" />
This is what I had in mind before shooting, the others were just on the fly.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 512px; height: 341px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_rSF3HJ7hGng/TECUwRUCOgI/AAAAAAAAADQ/eILWre5RbKc/s400/06Web.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5494555102394071554" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 512px; height: 341px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_rSF3HJ7hGng/TECU_i06III/AAAAAAAAADY/tqK05a6UO08/s400/04Web.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5494555364793393282" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 512px; height: 341px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_rSF3HJ7hGng/TECVnuUaQ5I/AAAAAAAAADg/rsFko_BwxSU/s400/10Web.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5494556055073080210" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 512px; height: 341px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_rSF3HJ7hGng/TECV0gvGg7I/AAAAAAAAADo/C64ae74F7Yg/s400/08Web.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5494556274765235122" />

NUMBER 20

I read a blog post months ago, which I printed out immediately and stuck on my wall, which both challenged and inspired me. Chase(the author) leaves you with 22 nuggets of info/challenges, upon which you can build. It's shamefully taken me this long to respond to one of them, and thats why this post is called number 20.
His 20th challenge was to concept, shoot and edit a short film in one day. Yesterday was that day for me. I was completely on my own and improvised as I went. I heard the song first and decided to use that as inspiration. I didn't start out with a storyboarded plan or even too much thought, I just wanted to act out what I've been going through lately and the song just seemed to fit.

I quit my job 2 weeks ago to launch into full time photography and it's been tough but I know God has amazing plans for my wife and I. The clip is about an internal struggle, where the world is saying no to another photographer/artist/person with dreams who wants to succeed, but God is saying I must be who He created me to be and trust Him for the rest.

Zack Arias Lighting Workshop

I downloaded Zack Arias weekend studio-lighting workshop from creativeLIVE and I've got to tell you it was way worth it! I bought it a few days before they even started, this way you get a discount cos you're kinda buying in faith. Well I'm stoked with my purchase. I would highly recommend it to a photographer who hasn't had much studio time. It starts off really basic to lay a foundation but gets interesting really quickly. I loved seeing Head like a kite and Tilson (band shoot). Buy it here. It's over 20 hours of teaching (good teaching) so it's not a quick cut youtube video leaving you with more questions than when you started.
I just wanted to throw it up here as a big up to creativeLIVE and Zack and his team. Thanks for working so hard!

Please support these guys so that they can continue to offer live teaching by industry pro's at amazing prices!

BLUE OCEAN THINKING

I was recently challenged to adopt a new way of thinking... My brother-in-law heard me out as a I spoke about how saturated the photography market is and blah blah blah! He's studying his MBA and knows a few things about business to say the least. Anyway, he said why don't you adopt blue ocean thinking? And I thought about tacky informercials in the middle of the day. He said it works like this, if there's a feeding frenzy going on the water becomes saturated with blood and limits or even eliminates vision. But, the fish who swim back a bit are in blue, clear water and have a much better perspective. A little bit "finding Nemo" I know, but the principle behind it is strong.
I've heard a million times over that you need to be an individual as an artist and have a clear vision and a unique approach to land any kind of work with value. I've come to find that's absolutely true, there are no short cuts here. The trap I've been in for a while is looking at other (really good/talented) photographers work far too often and comparing myself to it. While this is good to a degree, it's also a bad thing. You don't want to be a mixture of your favourite photographers, you want to be you. And only you can shoot like you. So I'm forcing my way out of the frenzy and finding my own angle. I encourage you to do the same, maybe you already are and this blog is just for me?

PUTTING TOGETHER A PORTFOLIO.

Maybe i'm an over thinker and this could very well be a non blog worthy post but I figured maybe someone else may have had the same thoughts, concerns, stresses that I've had.

How do I start? Where do I start? Leather bound book, coffee table book, website, flickr, facebook etc...
I think I've figured it out!
It starts with you (and me, i'm preaching to myself here) and the vision you have inside.

Fluffy, I know, but it's true. Your work is the most important thing about your portfolio. I've read so many blogs and interviews with art directors and buyers and they say the same thing, it's 95% the work that gets their attention. Sure, I know you cant send in a flip file with photo's in plastic sleeves but I think maybe the focus needs to be on the work more than anything else. Okay, now...what work do I put together and how many photos should I include? Which photos? Do they all have to match in some way?
You need to include the photos that tell who you are, the photos that you'd like to be hired to shoot and not what you think people will dig, however some crit is never a bad thing. It takes time and you might include photos today that you'll hate tomorrow but just as gold goes through a refining process so too must our work.
The next biggest thing is to never include pictures you're not really confident about just to bulk it out. Quality, definitely not quantity. A good starting point is to aim for 25 solid images. If you haven't got that many go and shoot some of your ideas. And if you haven't got the time or budget for your dream ideas then concept some simple ideas with friends and make do or go onto gumtree and advertise in search for upcoming models or athletes that might be keen to work with you for free. As my virtual friend always says, the dirtiest secret in photography is that you have to take a lot of pictures!-So true!
How do I know my style and what is my vision?I just like to take photos and want to get paid for it!
Well...as i've found out being a professional photographer is way more than being good at photography but that's maybe for another post. But as for style, I recently assisted an amazingly talented photographer, Joseph Ford, and he put it like this: if you take 100 photos (over a period of time) and 25 have the same feel, then thats your style.
If I could add to that I'd say it's also got to do with what caught your attention to push the shutter 100 times in the first place.
A website is a must nowadays and if you're trying to get noticed it makes it a ton easier. Livebooks do a sweet job for me, they cover all the bases and there's room for expansion when you start needing a few extra bits. A cool thing to do is to use all the new social media available to your advantage. It looks good if you can create a little eco-system between your portfolio site, your blog, your facebook account and your twitter feed. It broadens your marketing net and makes you more accessible. It also gives potential clients a much better picture of who they're about to hire.
A printed portfolio is also extremely important when you start wanting to bid for jobs. Some advice given to me was that it should be A3 landscape for a photographer (no set rules though) and printed on high quality photo paper. The actual portfolio is up to you but I think leather with your name stamped into the cover will do just fine. The one I'm looking for at the moment allows you to change prints whenever you want or if you're bidding for a particular job to focus on what might get you the job.

I hope I've answered some questions a young photographer might be asking. I certainly didn't know any of this when starting out.

VOLCANIC ASH?!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_rSF3HJ7hGng/S8iMnJo-epI/AAAAAAAAABU/1cD2DbbyX-g/s320/Volconic+ash+SunsetWEB.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5460769152417299090" />
I'm not normally an HDR guy, but it is only two images stuck together in Ps, and dramatic happenings call for dramatic measures. Everyone must be aware by now of the volcanic ash blowing over from Iceland. It's grounded all of London's airports and affected over 500 000 travellers. My friend Shane Rielly and his wife Lindsay being some of them. They were due to fly out this morning for a round the world trip to America, Australia and Indonesia. But as you can see from Shane's highly technical drawing, planes can't fly through ash. Anyway, the reason for me sharing this photo of the ash moving over some English fields, is that over the news they said it would produce amazing sunsets and it got me thinking. I wouldn't normally grab my camera to chase down a sunset somewhere but these were pretty rare conditions and I wanted to be a part of it. I'm normally such a snob when it comes to sunsets, but going all the way back to when i first started photography thats one of the things I filmed the most. It was great to touch base again just take a picture for the fun of it. When I grabbed my camera I didn't care if no one ever saw what I was about to shoot. I was just doing it because I wanted to. It's not even my chosen form of 'personal work' but it let me know that I was still amped on photography. All photography.

LEARN FOR FREE.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 262px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_rSF3HJ7hGng/S8bvc-JRXqI/AAAAAAAAAAc/6AAl-c8axmw/s320/Screen+shot+2010-04-15+at+11.48.42.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5460314879230566050" />
The newest development, a revolutionary one in fact, is this beautiful thing called creativeLIVE.com. It is a site set up to train and teach artists, photographers, painters and maybe some new avenues in the future. It was set up by Chase Jarvis and Craig Swanson. Chase is one of the worlds best commercial advertising photographers. He is also a director and mentor to like 1.8 million budding photographers online. Craig I know less about but Chase reckons he's a genius, I agree. They've set up a system to teach via live video streaming straight from the classroom. You sign up to their mailing list for whichever class interests you and they remind you when your class is about to start. If you miss a class or an entire workshop then you can download it for an extremely reasonable fee. Knowledge is priceless in my opinion so what they're asking for probably only covers the tutors fees and huge bandwidth bills. One of the best things is that it's taught by industry leaders and professionals. Guys like Vincent LaForet, Zack Arias, David Duchemin, John Greengo and many many more top notch photographers and creatives. They also offer courses on programmes like Aperture and the Adobe suite like, Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver and so forth. Check out the courses available on their calendar and sign up. It'll grow your photography/art/creative pursuit to new heights and then some! Please support these guys, they're onto something amazing here and it needs our interest and support to survive and grow. Here's the guy behind it:

This is truly amazing so sign up as soon as you can here.

PILE THEM UP...

Ideas are crazy valuable. When you get them, note I didn't say if you get them, write them down, draw them out, think them through. Use a moleskin notepad or your iPhone but don't let them fall through the cracks. If you're a photographer like me you cherish ideas, especially good ones, so even if you don't use them straight away hang on to them or even better share them with another creative friend. You might even get them onboard and produce something sick!
I use post-it notes a lot but I also have my notebook and iPhone. The reason for using the notes is purely to have them staring me in the face every time I get something out of my gear cupboard. Ever heard "out of sight, out of mind"? Well it's true for me and probably most others too. If I keep them in sight I keep thinking them over and adding to them, even making more notes of new ideas that spawn from those already written down. The thing is...if you do nothing with your ideas no one will even know besides you, but that is a potential regret that I'd personally like to avoid. Even if you go forward with your idea and shoot it, but it doesn't match up to your ideal original idea, you've at least gone out and done it. So when you think of something don't put it to the back of your mind with rest of your daily thoughts.
